Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and the Crosswalk Petition

    Dear Parents,

Today, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer held a press conference asking the DOT to give PS 11 our much need stop light and crosswalk on Skillman Avenue!

A big THANK YOU to all the parents who were able to attend this today and demonstrate your support!

For those of you who may not be aware, an urgent need has arisen for the addition of a new crosswalk on Skillman Avenue and 54th Street. Being that the main entrance of the P.S.11 has changed to 54th Street and Skillman, students have begun coming to and from school by crossing at this corner (between the Woodside Library and the P.S.11 entrance). This has created a very dangerous situation as there are no signs or any indication that a car should yield and cars tend to come very fast up Skillman Avenue.
We are asking the Department of Transportation to put a crosswalk, stop sign or stop light in this location. Please consider signing the attached petition (English and Spanish) and circulating to as many friends and neighbors as possible. We are aiming to collect 1,000 signatures by November 10. Completed signature pages can be returned to the security desk at the main office of PS11 or returned in your child’s backpack to the attention of the P.S.11 PTA.

Thank you for your support of this important cause!
    Sincerely,
    P.S.11Q PTA Executive Board

Emergency PTA Meeting- Presentation by Department of Transportation

PLEASE ATTEND AN EMERGENCY PTA MEETING

    MONDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2017 @ 8:30AM

    Dear PS 11Q Families,

As you know, the main entrance of PS 11Q is located on the corner of 54th Street and Skillman Avenue.  Children are dropped off and picked up all along Skillman Avenue and on 54th Street.  Last year, the school community requested a traffic light be placed on Skillman Avenue near what would become our main entrance, the request was denied.

Last week we learned that the DOT is planning a “Street Safety Improvement Project” for Skillman and 43rd Avenues. Part of the DOT’s plan includes:

    • Skillman Avenue becoming ONE lane
    1. Increasing congestion
    2. Parents will no longer be able to pull up to the curb to drop off and pick up their child
    3. stopped cars will block all traffic on Skillman Avenue
    • Creating protected bike lanes on Skillman Avenue DIRECTLY in front of our school
    1. Students will now have to cross a bike lane and the street to reach the library
    2. School buses will be unable to pull up to the curb—leaving them to wait in the one lane of traffic on Skillman Avenue

The plan does NOT include a traffic signal to ensure our children can safely cross the street.

We are very concerned on how this will impact the families of PS 11.  We are holding an Emergency PTA Meeting on Monday, December 18th and 8:30 am in the school cafeteria.  The Department of Transportation will be presenting their Bike Lane Proposal to parents.  Please make every effort to be at this meeting to gather more information and ensure your concerns and opinions are voiced.

Additionally, there will be a Community Town Hall Meeting hosted by Community Board 2 and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer at Sunnyside Community Services (43-31 39th St., Sunnyside) on Tuesday, December 19, 6-8 pm.  You will have an opportunity to voice your opinion at this meeting as well.

For more information, here is a link to the DOT’s proposal: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/skillman-ave-43rd-ave-nov2017.pdf

We encourage you to email your thoughts and questions to Community Board 2 to:

Debra Markell Kleinert, District Manager – QN02@cb.nyc.gov

Denise Keehan Smith, Chairwoman – Denise.KeehanSmith@gmail.com

As always, thank you for taking the time to become informed and ensure that our children are safe. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the PTA via email at: PS11QueensPTA@gmail.com.

    Call for Grade Parent Representatives!

As previously announced, the P.S.11Q PTA is currently seeking volunteers to serve as Grade Parent Representatives for the 2017-18 school year. These positions will serve as a liaison between the head teacher/classes of each respective grade and the PTA Executive Board.
