Emergency PTA Meeting- Presentation by Department of Transportation

MONDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2017 @ 8:30AM

Dear PS 11Q Families,

As you know, the main entrance of PS 11Q is located on the corner of 54th Street and Skillman Avenue.  Children are dropped off and picked up all along Skillman Avenue and on 54th Street.  Last year, the school community requested a traffic light be placed on Skillman Avenue near what would become our main entrance, the request was denied.

Last week we learned that the DOT is planning a “Street Safety Improvement Project” for Skillman and 43rd Avenues. Part of the DOT’s plan includes:

  • Skillman Avenue becoming ONE lane
  1. Increasing congestion
  2. Parents will no longer be able to pull up to the curb to drop off and pick up their child
  3. stopped cars will block all traffic on Skillman Avenue
  • Creating protected bike lanes on Skillman Avenue DIRECTLY in front of our school
  1. Students will now have to cross a bike lane and the street to reach the library
  2. School buses will be unable to pull up to the curb—leaving them to wait in the one lane of traffic on Skillman Avenue

The plan does NOT include a traffic signal to ensure our children can safely cross the street.

We are very concerned on how this will impact the families of PS 11.  We are holding an Emergency PTA Meeting on Monday, December 18th and 8:30 am in the school cafeteria.  The Department of Transportation will be presenting their Bike Lane Proposal to parents.  Please make every effort to be at this meeting to gather more information and ensure your concerns and opinions are voiced.

Additionally, there will be a Community Town Hall Meeting hosted by Community Board 2 and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer at Sunnyside Community Services (43-31 39th St., Sunnyside) on Tuesday, December 19, 6-8 pm.  You will have an opportunity to voice your opinion at this meeting as well.
